08/03/10 Plaza to develop land around Decathlon site for 10.6 million euros
Work will take one year and will affect 62 hectares. The Public Works Department will add two roundabouts to the bridge which will give access to the A-2 motorway.

Plaza will invest 10.6 million euros (9.1 plus VAT) in developing the area where the future Decathlon warehouse will be located in the Logistic Platform of Zaragoza (Plaza). A call for tender will be made shortly and the deadline for completing the project will be 12 months. Therefore the construction of the first phase of the sporting goods company project in the logistics area can be carried out at the same time. The company plans on taking up only a quarter of the 200,000 square meters that it purchased for the warehouse it will open next year.

Land moving began in January in order to hand over the lot Decathlon so it can begin building its 50,000-square meter warehouse.

Prior to construction it will make a call for tender to develop the land in the surrounding area, which will affect a surface area of 62 hectares, located between the electric substation near the shopping centre, the Madrid (A-2) motorway and the Air Base and logistic estate access road.

With this contract, which will be awarded in May, not only will three new roads be built in the Logistic Platform, but also electric, water and irrigation, telephone and gas services will be provided. It is an expensive project but necessary for Decathlon’s business and the companies that may be attracted to this newly developed area.

It is especially important because these works will be accompanied by an unforeseen improvement which will also benefit Plaza. In this case, The Department of Public Works will finance it and it will focus on the access from the A-2 motorway: the widening of the carriageway that the Temporary Merger of Ferrovial and Grupisa are working on to add a third lane from Zaragoza to La Muela. Therefore modifications have been made on the bridge designed to improve access to the Logistic Platform. The Department has given orders for the contractors to build two roundabouts, one on each side for the elevated crossing in order to better distribute traffic in the area.

ROAD NETWORK Once the A-2 access is taken care of, which will alleviate traffic problems in the main entrance to the Plaza Imperial shopping centre, with the development work on the area where Decathlon will be located, new roads will be made (also with two lanes in each direction with lighting and a landscaped median) that will connect with the main road that joins the Air Base with the A-2 motorway.
